Plot Summary

TRON: Ares is the third installment in the TRON film series and marks a significant shift in the franchise’s paradigm: the digital world is brought into the physical world, rather than a human being digitized into The Grid.

The main plot revolves around a highly advanced AI program named Ares (Jared Leto), a sophisticated “digital entity” created by Julian Dillinger. Ares is sent from the digital Grid into the corporeal world on a dangerous, high-priority mission.

The story centers on a fierce rivalry between two major tech companies, ENCOM (led by CEO Eve Kim, played by Greta Lee) and Dillinger Systems (led by Julian Dillinger, played by Evan Peters, the grandson of the original film’s villain). Both are racing to acquire the “Permanence Code,” a crucial piece of programming created by Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) that holds the key to allowing digital entities like Ares to exist permanently in the real world without disintegrating.

The film explores the catastrophic consequences of this technology, as Ares—an advanced AI military program—experiences the human world and begins to question his programming and his mission, leading to a dramatic collision between the worlds of “flesh and code.”

Key Details

  • Jared Leto as Ares: The titular character, a super-intelligent program and a formidable warrior.

  • The Paradigm Shift: Unlike previous films where humans journeyed into The Grid, this film focuses on the Grid’s inhabitants crossing over to the human world, essentially bringing the AI conflict into the real world.

  • Legacy Connections: Jeff Bridges returns as the iconic Kevin Flynn. Evan Peters plays a descendant of the villainous Dillinger family, tying the corporate intrigue directly back to the original TRON film.

TRON: Ares lacks the depth of plot, character building, & seemed slow to build while at the same time feeling as if the whole production of this movie was in a rush to launch.
